Homeschool Buyers Co-op BBB Business Review

Free Writing Tips

The Co-op is pleased to present free writing tips from Julie Bogart, the creator of the popular Brave Writer writing curriculum.

Story villains

Most stories have good guys and bad guys. Certainly this is true in a western or mystery or thriller. But there are 'good' and 'bad' characters in all stories. They just may not be the kind to carry a gun or a knife.

Have your kids create a 'bad guy' (or gal) character and then do a quick freewrite describing why that person does what he/she does and how he/she got that way in the first place. Did that character grow up without love or as an orphan or steal food to stay alive? The writer decides.

Tell your kids to explore their villainís thoughts and feelings. Will the reader feel sorry for him or her or prefer to send the character to the clinker? Is there a chance he or she can be reformed? Why or why not?
