Homeschool Buyers Co-op BBB Business Review

Free Writing Tips

The Co-op is pleased to present free writing tips from Julie Bogart, the creator of the popular Brave Writer writing curriculum.

Write about the sense of smell.

Smelling takes a back seat to the other senses, especially seeing and hearing. Why is this the case? Probably because the people, places, and objects we associate with the sense of smell do not have a strong odor. But when we do smell an item such as a fresh bouquet of flowers or spicy food or horse manure on a farm, we really notice it.

Have your kids describe a smell they're familiar with. It can be pleasant or horrible, potent or subtle. How about the perfume their grandmother wears, a musty old book in the library, or the tantalizing scent of cookies right from the oven? Suggest they do a short freewrite about the scent they chose and why and how it affected them.
