The Works is a great place for younger kids to explore science and engineering topics. Now located near 98th St. and Lyndale in Bloomington, there is plenty of space for kids to enjoy the hands-on demonstrations and exhibits. You can build and race K-nex cars, design a marble track, run through the sensor maze, or learn about simple machines and mechanical advantage among other things.

The Design Lab upstairs from the museum has rotating projects, which have included building circuits from simple components and creating catapults for pompoms from spoons and clothespins. This is my almost 5-year-old's favorite spot in The Works.

They offer homeschool classes one Monday per month with a variety of topics throughout the school year.

The tax-deductible family membership is a great bargain at just $70 per year (as of 2014). It will pay for itself in just 5 visits for a parent and one child; it can also get you free or reduced-price entry at hundreds of other museums around the country.
