Our homeschool group took a trip to Sterling Hill Mine in March 2010. It's a great tour into an actual mine that was in operation till the mid-80's. The tour guide had worked in the mine (though not as an actual miner) and he added an air of authenticity.

However, he was a little too gruff in my opinion for the young ones in our group (and some of the mothers.) I also felt the staff was unorganized when I would call to ask questions, confirm our headcount, etc. The right hand didn't always know what the left hand was doing.

We did do the rock discovery portion which was not as great as we expected but we were a small group in competition with a larger school group and it was a cold day. The process was rushed and rather anti-climatic.

All in all, I recommend the experience if you are studying geology. There are some unique things to learn in a mine vs. a cave and some unique things about rocks in NJ worth seeing.
