Dedicated to the life & times of General Sam Houston, former Governor of Tennessee, victor over Santa Anna in the Texas War of Independence, first President of the Republic of Texas, Senator from the State of Texas and Governor of the State of Texas.

In the springtime the museum offers tours for large school groups. Spring tours consist of a short video about Sam Houston, guided visits to each historic building, the Memorial Museum, and demonstrations such as hearth cooking, black powder, historic toys, blacksmithing, medicine, phrenology, and spinning. Hands-on programs offered including the popular "Work and Play on the Farm."

The Sam Houston Museum is near Sam Houston University. If your children are older, you can also tour campus and the Museum. There is some walking involved, so go when the weather is favorable. There is an indoor museum with artifacts about Sam Houston and Texas History, but there are also house structures on the property that you may walk to and view. The houses are decorated on the inside, but doorways are blocked off by glass so you may only glimpse inside. Each doorway has a button you may push for information about that room. There is a small store where you may buy books and small items about pioneer days.
