A visit to Old Salem is a step back into time of a people who came to America for freedom to live and worship freely. Plan to spend the day. Stop by the Winkler Bakery for refreshments to sample authentic Moravian treats. Have lunch at the Old Salem Tavern where the food is authentic and delicious and the surroundings help you submerge yourself into Old Salem as it once was. A visit to near-by Historic Bethabara first would be an enhancement to a visit to Old Salem as Bethabara was the early Moravian settlement before Salem was established. Christmas is a special time to visit. I highly recommend it.

We adore Old Salem! You can go just for a light educational fun trip or schedule full tours of this Moravian settlement (1660-1860)with hands on experience making food, pots, toys, gardening & take home period plants, make beeswax candles, apothecary items and more. They offer great educational workshops for homeschoolers during the year so check their website.

Holidays (if you celebrate)are fun at Old Salem and enriching. Halloween and days leading up to it, they offer FREE trick or treating through the town and a night lantern haunted tour complete with storytelling through the town and gardens. The night tour isn't too scary and appropriate for about 5 & up depending on maturity.
Christmas offers beautiful environment, caroling, Moravian Lovefeast, crafting, adult and kids workshops, great shopping & more.

They sell period items like cookbooks, toys, baked items, beeswax candles, and the like. Do not leave with trying a Moravian bun! Before you go, have children research what letter is on the bun and what it means (interesting activity). For the same Moravian baked items at lower cost,(you can order online also)-check out Dewey's Bakery in Winston-Salem as well.

This can be a very pricey fieldrip if your budget is tight. We like to make a mini vacation out of it at certain times of the year for a weekend and add SECCA, Reynolda Gardens, SciWorks, and other fun educational stops.

Most of the experience is walking from period house to house on uneven cobblestone with some surfaces paved, depending on type of tickets purchased. There are also graveyards and other outdoor areas such as the period gardens. Wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen. Bring strollers or buggy if needed. I always take a backpack with water, wipes, and small snack items.

I recommend taking a general guided tour through houses (description on website) that interest your family to get a feel for the site and then going back for a holiday festivities trip and then taking a workshop of interest to get "behind the ropes" access and education. Old Salem offers a lot more than just the traditional surface tours.
