Facility:Old Mission State Park
Description:Idaho's oldest standing building. The Mission of the Sacred Heart (or Sacred Heart Mission) was constructed between 1850 and 1853 by Catholic missionaries and members of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. This is a rare educational experience, giving visitors an opportunity not found anywhere else, giving visitors an opportunity to examine the dynamics and complexities between Jesuit missionaries and the tribal people among whom they settled.

This is a great field trip for anyone studying Idaho State History. The Idaho Historical Society offers a free Idaho State History curriculum which is downloadable on the web.The Cataldo Mission and those associated with it are frequently referenced throughout the curriculum. This trip is the perfect reward to illustrate the study of Idaho State History. The mission provides a short film and tour. Pack a lunch as picnic tables are available.

If you're homeschooling in Idaho, OR even just visiting, you have got to make time to visit Idaho's OLDEST historical site! Our last trip to the Old Mission included my niece, who was visiting from Missouri, but had chosen Idaho for her 5th grade "State Project." We had a wonderful afternoon exploring Idaho's rich heritage. It was enjoyable for all ages - from our three year old through our pre-teens, teens and adults.
