Description:In addition to visiting the museum's galleries that are filled with artworks representing every era of history, the MFAH offers a wide array of learning experiences for families who visit the museum. Throughout the year, there are activities at the main campus of the museum, as well as at Bayou Bend and Rienzi, including tours, concerts and performances, art-making activities, sketching opportunities, storytelling, and films. Guided tours especially for children Pre-K to 2nd grade are offered on Sundays with no reservation required. See the website for info on all the events and exhibits they have to offer!

Best for:
1) Art appreciation: developing an eye for line, color, shape and more
2) Art history and history: learning history through art and how art evolves, changes over time, cross-cultural influences
3) Geography: learning the world through the context of the art
4) Art: encouraging the artist within
5) Langauge Arts: providing material for inspiration and background visuals for literature
6) Math: discussing proportion
7) Science: learning about pigments, metallurgy and more

Peak age of enjoyment: 0-100+ y.o.

Pros: 6th largest art museum in nation, excellent travelling exhibitions, docent led talks throughout the week, family programs, free on Thursdays, lots of terrific programs(check museum calendar at www.mfah.org), wide range of art across continents, time periods, cultures, peaceful, free parking in open lot

Cons: some major artists are not represented, can not picnic indoors but can picnic in the sculpture garden across the street

Cautions: wear comfortable shoes

This is a great place to go any day of the week during their regular exhibits. However, they also have some amazing special exhibits. If you go on Thursdays it is free so perfect for supplemental lessons when you are studying art. They also have homeschool days and activities for kids. A great time. Highly recommended.
