This is one of our favorite museums. I've been visiting here since I was in elementary school, and now take my children. Parking is $1/hour on weekdays in the lot, free on weekends. There is an admission fee to the museum (18+ - $6; 65+ - $4; 6-17 - $2; 5 & under - free), but all admission is free on Sundays. On the main floor they have a gift shop, cafeteria, and a huge white pine tree in the center of the museum that is surrounded by glass and grows all the way up through the center of the museum. There's also a temporary exhibit hall on the main floor and the exhibit changes maybe once a year. On the second floor you begin your experience in pre-historic Michigan. As you make your way through the museum, and up to the third floor, you basically walk a timeline of Michigan history. Along the way there are some interactive exhibits and really interesting things. A few of our favorites are the walk through the copper mine, the Civil War exhibit, the old school room and 1890's home, the 1920's street scene, and 1950's house. The State Library is also housed inside the museum, which I used several times in high school for research papers but haven't been there in about 15 years. The museum is a great way to spend a couple hours learning about Michigan history and our family looks forward to enjoying many more visits in the future!
