Facility:Longleaf Trace
Description:Hidden away from the bustle of the city is a path that takes you back in time, back to when railroads ruled the countryside, hauling Hattiesburg's rich timber products to the Coast and points north. For more than 40 miles, from Hattiesburg to Prentiss, the reclaimed grade of the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad carries walkers, joggers, bikers and assorted riders along the same path that helped build the City of Hattiesburg.

This is a really great ride for older students in the fall and winter, here in Hattiesburg. You could even plan an overnight roundtrip if your ambitious. We have younger children, so it was a bit harder, since they couldn't ride as far, but there are a number of places to go off-roading, and it seemed relatively safe. There were many different types of people out biking, from the serious minded to the leisurely. It gave us a great opportunity to teach road manners for bikers to our children also, since we had to stop and cross roads, pass slower riders, and move over for faster paced ones.

The path was scenic and lit up in downtown Hattiesburg, and further out, there were lots of signs posted that told the names of the different tree types. All in all, it was a great outing for our family and we went back multiple times. I will be planning that overnight trip, once my kids get old enough to ride the full distance of the Trace.
