Central Park Zoo is not a big zoo (definitely not as big as the Bronx Zoo). But it is a nice place to spend an afternoon in the city. The outdoor exhibitions are animals from colder climates so I've found it best to visit during the cooler months to see these animals when they are most active. After visiting the outdoor exhibits you can warm yourself up in the Tropical House. There you will see many exotic birds, animals, snakes and bats. Warning: It does get pretty warm in there so if you do go during the cooler months, layer your clothes and adjust accordingly to the temperatures outside and for inside of the Tropical Zone.

There's also the Tisch Children's Zoo that is included with the ticket price but is just outside of the zoo itself. That area has more domestic animals with children's themes and activities plus a petting zoo. Free parking is a bit of a hassle to find in this area so public transportation is a great alternative.
