We have taken our daughter several times at various ages and it never gets old! She loves looking for different varities of butterflies and trying to convince them to land on her. She has even found that as she is older, it is great for practicing her wildlife photography. They also have a film and exhibits of how butterflies hatch as well as displays of them in various stages of development. If you only have time to do one thing at Calloway, this would be it!

Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center is a favorite stop for us any time of the year! You step into lush plants in a terrarium like setting with butterflies of all types flying freely around the building. There are large laminated identification cards about 11x17, full of information and pictures of the butterflies. Before entering the area of the butterflies in a glass section that shows butterflies in all stages of development. Sometimes we even see the butterflies coming out of their cocoon. There is a wonderful short video on development. After all that we enjoy checking out the gift shop with unique items and educational items at all prices. They even include an close and up front special "single bird" show in the main entrance every so many minutes. Lots of Fun!

The butterfly center is beautiful, just beautiful! Just before you go into the area with the butterflies you can watch butterflies hatch from their chrysalises in a hatchery. I could barely pull my 6yr old away from the hatchery.

Once you enter the area where the butterflies are you will see many kinds of non-native plants, many of which are in bloom. And all types of non-native butterflies. Some of the butterflies are quite large. There are some benches for you to sit on while you take it all in. There is a water feature that starts out as a waterfall which goes into a stream and then into a koi pond. You can purchase fish food and feed the koi.

I hope to make a trip to the butterfly center this school year when we do our unit on butterflies.
