Facility:Castlewood Canyon
Description:Nature lovers and groups enjoy environmental diversity on several hiking trails ranging from mild to moderate. The winding Cherry Creek flowing along the canyon floor provides wonderful rest stops.

Remnants of geologic and local history combine when the then Castlewood Dam burst in 1933, sending a 15-foot-high wave of water into Denver. Ruins of the original ill-fated dam and the historic homestead still exist for hikers to see.

The park's visitor center has several exhibits exploring the varied ecosystems and wildlife present in the park as well as historical photos and records of the failed dam. The park offers many educational programs and activities throughout the year.

We live close to Castlewood Canyon and get to visit pretty often. This has been a pretty popular and somewhat crowded park many of the times we have been here. But, we truly enjoy the trails, the giant boulders in the running river, the damn is neat, the sun is scorching hot in the summer. We have found, fish, crayfish, poison ivy, snakes, and accidentally dropped a water jug off a cliff. I find the map somewhat confusing, therefore I lack confidence in which crazy trail to take. We have ended up parking at one lot, hiking, and ending up at the lot on the other side of the park, oops. Take lots of water in the summer, take off your socks and shoes and get your feet wet. It is a beautiful park and the reason we are annual pass holders! Be sure to check out the homestead at the other entrance.
