One of the best places to visit. We actually did not go into the house (it was closed the day we were there), but even without that there is a wonderful museum for the First Infantry (the Big Red One, Army). When you step into this place it is like going back in time. It is like walking through a diorama. Example, when you enter the museum they depict the beaches of France and the foxholes... as if you were actually there.

The museum chronicles all the fighting (wars) that the First Infantry was involved in. Very fun, we went back more than once during the summer that we spend in Chicago. Also, the grounds has several military tanks to climb on, not mention some beautiful gardens. You could spend all day here.

When we went there the entrance fee was by car, so it made it very affordable. Not sure if they still do that.

Beautiful grounds great for learning botany including labels in many plants. Great events. Enjoyed 4th of July free events this year. Complete with brass band with canons, kids games, bounce houses, patriotic music. War museum cover all wars to current. Wonderful being able to land on Normand beach, go through the jungles of Vietnam. Helps bring history alive. Enjoyed being able to go through the mansions including learning about the newspaper business in history.
