I would rate this more stars if I could. I took my 7 and 9 year old on this 2 hour excursion, and we LOVED it so much that we were disappointed when it ended and we had to get off the boat! Since we were staying in the city, it was such a nice experience to step out into their natural setting, and enjoy the beauty and peace of the swamp area. The boats are small (hold up to 20 people sitting), which is intimate enough to not be crowded, you can hear and interact with the guide, and get really close to the shore areas with its wildlife. The guide was very knowledgeable about all of the wildlife, history and human habitation of the area. We got to see alligators, different types of birds, turtles, snakes, tons of plant life and fish. The guide did interact with one of the gators, and my son got to hold a snake. Mine were the only kids on the trip, so the guide sort of catered to them; talked to them, asked questions, made sure they got to see everything. This is not only a wonderful experience for all of the senses, but very educational.
Some things I would note for this excursion:
- You need to make reservations, as this is a small operation.
- This is about 45 minutes (no traffic) out of New Orleans downtown. If you drive, leave plenty of time. They also offer transportation from major areas for an additional fee.
- You have the option of riding in a covered or non-covered boat.
- You will see different types of wildlife and foliage depending on the time of year. If you are set on seeing something in particular call first so you are not disappointed. It is not like a zoo where they are contained just so you can see them.
- Remember your sunscreen/hat if you will choose a non-covered boat.
- Call ahead to find out if you will need bug spray. They are not an issue when the boat is moving, but can be when it slows/stops to watch the wildlife.
- There are times when the boat brushes right up against reeds and grasses. A gator did come right up to the boat. I did experience some no-see-ums munching on me. This is a great trip for nature lovers!
