|Description:||Scientists know more about the surface of the moon than about the seafloor! Its size, depth, and extreme conditions make exploring this area challenging. However, the seafloor is the largest geologic feature of our planet with a landscape as dramatic as anything one might find on land, including both the world’s tallest mountains and deepest canyons. The seafloor provides the largest habitat on the planet, supporting uniquely adapted organisms, and is a source of both energy and raw materials.
In this activity, students will use easily obtained materials to simulate how scientists map the ocean floor. Students will gain an appreciation of the topography of the seafloor and basic survey techniques.
