Ask The Author!!!

Hey there, Chester Comix fans! Have you ever wondered how the author, Bentley Boyd, came up with his Chester or John Otter characters, or how long it takes to create a story, or what new comic books are in the works?

Now is your chance to find out! When you post a question below, Bentley will answer just as soon as he can, usually within a day. But be patient! He likes to take camping trips with his son, so it may be few days before he is able to reply. Your mom or dad will be notified by email when he replies, so that you can come back here to see his response! (Need help?)

Are your comix in the aligned core curriculum?

6 years ago · Like · Comment
Bentley Boyd: Thanks for the question! The Common Core is a snappy title in search of structure and meaning. A lot of states are still batting around exactly what "Common Core" means for an individual classroom. Here's a link to a blog post I did containing my thoughts about the Core:
http://www.chestercomix.com/blog/2013/

And here's a stab at lining my books up to what the Core generally means -- but it's not a guarantee since each state is different!

weareHis: Are the older versions available that are not aligned? I prefer not to have anything aligning with CC.

We're very excited that your Chester Comix are now available as iPad books! Will you offer these on iTunes at a discount for Homeschool Buyers Co-Op members? Thanks!

8 years ago · Like · Comment
Bentley Boyd: Hi, Kathy! Apple asks me up front if I want to allow for educational discounts, and I have told them yes. But they set the terms of those discounts. There is no further negotiation with them after I say "yes," and I believe they want the educational discount to apply to bulk purchases. Do you have a group of homeschool families that you work with?

Will you write a comic about the Gulf War? That is something I am interested in.

9 years ago · Like · Comment
Bentley Boyd: Colleen -- thanks for the suggestion!! I have two books in mind to bring Chester Comix readers up to the present:
A) The Cold War -- it would end with the Berlin Wall fall in 1989 (I have pieces of the Wall myself because I visited just a few months after it came down).
B) The War on Terrorism -- it would start in the 1970s and come to present day; in there would be a look at the Persian Gulf War.

The trouble is that there's a lot of research and drawing needed for me to get those published -- the Cold War book would need two new chapters from scratch, and the War on Terrorism book would need to be completely drawn from scratch -- it's just an idea in my head right now! It takes me about 6 months to get a whole book from blank page to published, so I can't tell you these will be anytime soon. But if you have specific things you'd like me to cover in those books, please say!

Colleen: I should have said that note was really from my son, Elijah. He is 12 and LOVES your comics. He can read them over and over (and his 14 year old sister does too). His passion has been WW2 for a long while, but just recently branched into the Gulf War. (Since he has read all the library books he could get his hands on for that topic already!) These 2 books sound like great additions, as well as the WW1 book you describe below. We'll look forward to getting them. I am amazed that you can do a whole book in 6 months. Thanks for all you do to make kid-friendly history come alive!

My son would like to know what comics you are working on and when they will be available.

Cheryl: Yes. More, please! Will Chester be doing some traveling, perhaps?

Bentley Boyd: Kim and Cheryl! Great news -- I JUST got my new comic off the UPS truck yesterday! It's a biography of George Washington that I drew for Mount Vernon last fall. It's already selling like hoecakes up at Mount Vernon (GW loved hoecakes, which were a bit like cornmeal pancakes), but now I can make it available to the Co-op! Keep your eye open for the deal, coming soon.

Beyond that, I'm trying to finish up and print a World War I book this spring. It's been on my drawing board for a looooooooooooooooooooong time, and it has gotten put aside for special opportunities such as the Washington book. But with a few more weeks of work, it should be ready for publication this spring!
