I signed up for the trial subscription to see what I could gleen from it. This is a resource all homeschool moms should have at their fingertips. When you run out of ideas or the material you have is not working this is the solution. Each catagory has a dozen to thousands of websites with different approaches to teaching. The nice part is that they have already been screened by professional educators so you can let you children work on these sites without constant supervision. I signed up for NetTrekker, without high expectations, as it was a free trial. I never got around to even checking it out until Brett asked for a testimonial. When I started "playing" with it, I was flabbergasted at how fabulous it is. My 14 year old daughter spends hours searching for relevant material for her assignments (she is doing American distance ed high school at home in Fiji). This targets exactly what she needs on a first try with all sites relevant and of very high quality. It will save her a huge amount of time as well as improve quality of output. I have enjoyed the site very much. I like how each subject is catagorized, makes it much easier to do searches. I have been looking especially for science ideas/programs for next year and it was extremely helpful in that. I will certainly keep using. This is a double wonderful program for our family. I work out of the home, and feel like I waste half my life trying to find educational resources. I am thrilled to have the information at my finger tips. Additionally, I write historical fiction novels and often run into snags finding the information I need. I have tried this program, as a test so to speak, and was very happy with the amount of information it found for me. We use a pretty eclectic curriculum so we do a fair amount of "do it yourself" - this is an easy way to find great websites. I really like that they are ranked by readability - so I can find sites my 4th-grade-level reader can navigate himself! In just a few uses, I have found this site to be exceptionally helpful and timesaving, in part because the searches and relevant information are provided by school levels; elementary, middle and high school. Right now, I am focused on the high school level and with the targeted results of netTrekker, I don't have to spend my time eliminating search results that pertain to lower grade level material. (I've spent a lot of time these past few months eliminating possibilities more than finding them, so this feature by itself is gold.)
Being diligent by nature, I was surprised netTrekker found many wonderful, pertinent and useful sites that I haven't found via my other search methods.
Also, my learner goes beyond the curriculum in many subjects, and NetTrekker has helped me find appropriate information that I struggled to find before, and at the same time, reduced the volume of data I had to go through yet still identified wonderful resources.
It was very helpful knowing someone else had looked at the many sites and assessed their content and applicability. The summary that is provided for each suggested site is easy to scan and assess quickly for relevance, and at the same time, adds to my knowledge of what's available. I've gotten more ideas of what to pursue, and how to pursue it via homeschooling as a result.

My girls (12 & 14) love the efficiency of researching projects and not having to sift through irrelevant data and questionable websites. Also the streaming videos where invaluable for their capturing the cultural flavor of Burkina Faso.
The science game we found for photons and electromagnetism made the learning aspect much easier (and fun).

I have been using the free trial of netTrekker and am so impressed! We were doing a unit on the skeletal system and I had already done a Google search for interactive web sites and found a few good ones. But, when I searched on netTrekker there were a bunch of awesome sites I would have never found! It also gives a short summary, a reading level for the site, if there are interactive games, and lots more! My kids were thrilled with all the interactive sites I found. Another great thing is the read aloud option. When you turn this on, it will read anything you highlight aloud! You can even change the voice and speed of the reader! I definitely want to continue to use it, but like most of the homeschoolers I know, I want the best deal possible! NetTrekker is excellent; in fact, I signed up two friends (so far) for the Homeschool Buyers Co-op just so they could try this product. This resource is indispensable to our family for several reasons.
My searches give me only useful, educational results that have been personally reviewed by an educator. I was looking for material for a co-op class, and within minutes I had several great resources to use. I would have wasted a lot of time wading through junk if I used Google. It is far superior even to other free educational portals, like Merlot, GEM, and education.net because it is easier to use, gives better results, and gives far more information about a site before visiting it.
Besides getting only relevant and useful results, I get a host of other information before I even go to a site, like rating, reading level, and type of material (text, audio, video, maps, etc.)
I can search in a variety of useful ways--key word, grade level, reading level, multimedia type, learning aids, and state standards are some of them. I can create time lines and search for famous people in a time span I specify.
My oldest child is almost 9 and I have not let him do online searches, though I think this is an important skill to learn. NetTrekker is the perfect place to teach this because there are no adds and no vulgar results, including image searches!
Unfortunately, because this is designed for schools, of course there are no tags or ratings regarding religious content. Searches yield sparse results, often from secular sources. It does not have the same depth here as is available in other subjects.

I have to say that I was doubtful at first as to whether this tool would be helpful or not, but I am convinced now that as good as I am at searching the Internet, this tool is better! I found sites I would never have found on my own, and they were relevant, and exactly what I was looking for! I am constantly searching for sites that will enhance my homeschooling curriculum, and this tool made this sometimes tedious job so much easier!! I highly recommend it! netTrekker really has been great for my son - he loves to research, but being 10, I've never allowed him to do internet research on his own; there are too many inappropriate sites he could run into on other search engines. With netTrekker, he can research to his heart's content, and as he's dyslexic, the Read Aloud feature makes it so easy for him to find what he's looking for. I can't say enough great things about it! We're definitely getting a subscription!
