Dear Fellow Co-op Member,

A very special opportunity for members with middle or high school students, a robust Group Buy pipline, our SmartPoints Marathon winner, and more in this newsletter!
~~~ A Special Opportunity ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As homeschoolers, we are committed to giving our children the best possible education. For many of us, our ultimate educational goal is to help our children gain entrance to a great college or university.
Since we are outside the mainstream, it is challenging for us to get the guidance we need to prepare ourselves and our children for college admission.
That is about to change!  One of the top college counselors in the United States, Dr. Ken Hartman, is about to launch a new online service for parents of college-bound students -- the Virtual College Counseling Center.
The core service of the VCCC will be a series of regularly scheduled "College Knowledge Webinars" where participants will be able to interact with Dr. Hartman and other experts from the world of admission and financial aid.  All you need is a telephone, computer and high speed Internet connection.
But here's the really exciting news. Dr. Hartman has agreed that initially, the Center will open its door's EXCLUSIVELY to Homeschool Buyers Co-op members, and that the webinars will be tailored to the needs our homeschooling membership!
What topics do YOU want to cover?  What are YOUR key questions and concerns relative to college and career for your children?  Do you want to know the best strategies for securing financial aid, scoring well on the SAT or ACT, or applying to college?  Let us know your questions NOW. We'll pass them on to Dr. Hartman, and he'll build the webinar agenda around the topics that interest YOU!
We have not worked out all the details of particulars for members who want to participate, but as with all Co-op opportunities, it will be an incredible deal relative to the alternatives.  We expect that we will be able to offer an annual subscription to VCCC for less than $50 with enough members participating.
    This is such a fantastic savings opportunity for members - we decided to extend it another month to give members a chance to make it possible to save over 80% on highly regarded test prep from market leader Kaplan.  We are already half way to the needed minimum participants for an SAT license and have a good start on the ACT.  We are optimistic that with a little more time we will get the minimum number of participants, particularly as more members come back from vacation and get back to business in August.
~~ In the Pipeline ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We asked members to help us set priorities, and here's where we stand on some of the Group Buys in the pipeline.
  • Voyages in English from Loyola Press
    We can probably swing a Group Buy for high-quality English, Writing, and Grammar textbooks from Loyola Press if there is enough member interest.  These are printed textbooks delivered to your door -- not online subscriptions.  Click here to take a peek into a sample of one of their textbooks.  Click here to review a teachers's manual.  What do you think?
  • Math Fact Fluency from Houghton Mifflin
    It's official.  We got a sufficiently positive response that we went ahead and purchased a school subscription and will launch a Group Buy in the coming weeks. Math Fact Fluency goes way beyond flash cards as a way to help kids grade 1-4 master their basic math facts in a fun and compelling format.  You may want to toss your flash cards in the recycle bin when you see what this product can do.
    Math Fact Fluency is so new that there are no web pages devoted to it, and the demo version we can show you still has some rough edges, BUT, if you take the time to go all the way through it, you can get a feel for how it works:
    Test drive Math Fact Fluency
    When you get to the website, just click the "Math Fact Fluency" link on the right side of the page.
    This product is offered by the SkillsTutor division of Houghton Mifflin. An annual license will cost $30-$50.  What do you think?
  • A+LearningLink
    Member response to this new, state-of-the-art assessment tool was very positive. PLUS, further investigation by the Co-op increases our confidence that this is product is extremely high quality, perhaps better than anything else currently available to homeschoolers.  PLUS, it simply won't be available to homeschoolers unless the Co-op steps up to the plate, so we have decided to go forward with this one.  Look for a Group Buy in early August.
    This package will include math and reading tests -- two of each -- which are administered online at your convenience at the beginning AND end of your school year --or whenever you want -- so that you can see clearly the progress made in that timeframe.  After each test, you'll get a PDF with comprehensive assessment and prescriptive information.  It will probably be priced somewhere around $50.  Pound for pound, we think it may be the best price this caliber of assessment technology anywhere on the market.  You'll find a more complete write-up in our Last Week news page.   Take a look and let us know:  What do you think?
  • Brainware Safari
    We were blown away by member enthusiasm for this innovative product but, not surprisingly, most folks were very concerned about the $349 price.
    Good news!  We were successful in persuading the manufacturer that home schools deserved pricing comparable to that paid by regular schools. We are please to report that, with sufficient volume, this award-winning software will be available to Co-op'ers for as little as $49.95.   WOW!
    For those of you who missed out previously, the idea of this product is that the cognitive skills needed to excel academically -- attention, visual processing, auditory processing, sensory integration, memory, and thinking -- can be exercised and thereby improved.  And improved cognitive skills will improve a child's self-esteem and academic achievement across the board.
    Brainware Safari is online software that has been designed to help children 6-12 develop their cognitive skills in a fun and entertaining video game format.
    We will be contacting a few of you to see if you would be willing to let us record a session with you getting demo from one of the product's creators.  We'll then make that recording available to all members to help them make their purchase decision.
    You'll find a more complete write-up in our Last Week news page.  Take a look, and lets us know: What do you think?
  • ChesterComix
    This one captured the imaginations of many members, including one who wrote us:
    "These comic books are superbly done. I just purchased the most recent 6 books to update our set.  My boys devour them and enjoy them over and over.  The books use right-brain and graphic organizer strategies which aid retention.  I highly recommend pursuing this as a Group Buy."
    Alrighty then, we will!   We have no idea yet as to pricing, so stay tuned to the newsletter for more info.
    What do you think?
  • Descartes Cove from John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth
    This one took GRAND PRIZE in terms of member response.  We're on it! We have had a positive response from one level of Johns Hopkins organization, but we are still waiting for the boss to weigh in.
    We still have no idea as to pricing, but we would expect a substantial discount if it comes to pass. Descartes Cove is an intriguing interactive math adventures for middle and early high school students. Created with generous funding from the AT&T Foundation and Toyota USA Foundation, the Cove includes six CDs for Windows or Macintosh computers, each launching a new island adventure and covering a different area of math.  What do you think?
  • Kiddix Computing
    Members liked the price, but a few didn't like that it is Linux-based and doesn't include a CD-ROM drive.  Most respondents, however, were "Very Interested or "Would Definitely Buy."  As a result, we were encouraged by the response to go forward with this Group Buy.  As always, we bring you the deals and information about the products, but YOU have to decide whether any particular products if right for YOUR home school.
    Look for a Group Buy next week or the week thereafter.
    What would YOU say about a Group Buy for a complete desktop PC, kid-safe, and fully loaded with kid-friendly software -- all for less than $300?  What do you think?
  • Destination Math from Houghton Mifflin
    This staple online math curriculum used by thousands of schools around the country. We are still cogitating whether to go forward with this, and would appreciate more member feedback.  Try a demo, then tell us:  What do you think?
