I can't even remember how many times we've been to the crayola factory now. It's very close for us. My kids' favorite part is the canal museum on the top floor (included in admission). They could play for hours and learn about the canal system while doing it. It is not a good idea to go when there are a lot of field trips, however, because the place just gets too crazy and crowded, so I would call and inquire about that first. This is more of a fun field trip than overly educational I'd say. My kids (7,4,1) are drawn to the balls and dancing light screen, etc. There are only so many times one can sit through a presentation on how we make a crayon, although that is good because it is very interesting and brief enough for kids. You get lots to take home here! There is a trolley that can take you to the canal ride which I'd only reccommend for maybe 2nd/3rd grade and up. But you can always go and see the mules and play at the park without actually getting on the boat. Check out local advertisements for buy one get one coupons.

I took my 1,3,& 5 year old to the factory and we had a great time. We went on a Tuesday and was very glad that the factory was not busy. We were a bit disappointed in the making of the crayons as we had to watch sitting down on bleaches behind glass. It wasn't too impressive for the kids and definitely not the highlight of our trip. We received a couple of freebies (4 crayons, a marker, and some of Crayola's modeling clay). Lots of projects to do throughout the factory. Overall a good trip, just not exactly what I thought it would be like.

We've been to the Crayola Factory twice now and the kids have had a blast both times. We didn't sit through the making of crayons/markers the second time as it's a very short "show" run by one of the employees (they stopped running actual factory tours years ago). There are several very large floors of arts, crafts & activites to keep you busy for anywhere from a few hours or from opening until closing - which is what we did!

If you're looking for something a bit more educational in your day take a trip all the way to the top floor where you'll find the Canal Museum. Here you'll learn all about the Canal, the mules & barges, and how the locks on the canal function with a hands-on run up a recreation of the canal (Note: they'll get wet!).

Well worth the trip and I agree that calling ahead to see if/how many fields trips are scheduled is a must, especially if you have several kids to keep an eye on! There's a McDonalds connected to the Factory and the Crayola Store is right next door.
