Description:

Situated on a hill overlooking 8.5 acres of land, this 1869 Victorian mansion has been restored and is the residence of the governor. Tours are available of the first two floors showing elaborate stained glass windows, crystal chandeliers, polished woodwork, statuary and paintings.

For Iowa kids, this is a fun adventure that can easily be combined with a trip to the Capitol. It is a good idea to plan ahead, as tours are by appointment. However, the tours are thorough, and the house is beautiful. Our kids enjoyed considering that this was where the governor actually lives (and even tried to peek to see if he was home).
