Facility:SunWatch Indian Village
Description:SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park is a partially reconstructed Fort Ancient period Native American village along the Great Miami River in Dayton, Ohio. The Fort Ancient culture as defined by archaeologists occupied the Middle Ohio River Valley between about AD 1000 and AD 1650 from what is now southeastern Indiana east to modern day West Virginia. The Fort Ancient peoples who lived in this area were the first intensive farmers of the area, and the last prehistoric group to occupy it prior to the arrival of European settlers. Unfortunately we do not know exactly who their modern descendants are.

We took our kids to this park on a weekday just as they opened. We were the only ones there for a while. We started out watching a video on the history of the park, then moved into the museum display area, where there were many artifacts to view. The employees were very helpful and were interested in answering any questions we had and were very knowledgeable about the history of Sunwatch. We went outside where the kids got to go into the hut replicas, each with information explaining what they were used for, etc. There was a canoe they could sit in as well. The gardens of native Ohio flowers/plants were very nice as well. It is tucked back from the main road, so it took a little to get there, but it was worth it. There is a train line nearby, so we got to see a few trains rushing by as well.
