Facility:Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens
Description:Some things you won't want to miss at the Santa Barbara Zoo: The Barnyard, home to domestic sheep, which you can feed with specially formulated pellets available for purchase at the Bryant & Sons Kids’ Marketplace adjacent to the barnyard. Feed the beautiful lories and lorikeets at Lorikeet Landing, next to the barnyard. These birds eat fruit and nectar in the wild, and you can feed them here at the Zoo! The youngest visitors will find the carousel a treat. A Dentzel original, the carousel features hand-carved exotic animals.
Get up close and personal with the tallest residents of the Zoo! Hand feed Baringo giraffes and have the experience of a lifetime. And don't miss a ride on the Zoo Train! Two C.P Huntington trains that circle the perimeter of the Zoo delight visitors of all ages.

We absolutely LOVE the SB Zoo! It was a favorite destination of our family for years. Indeed, we know many people who travel a couple times a year three hours or more to visit this fabulous, interactive playground for all ages.

Right now, they have some baby capybaras (basically, VERY LARGE guinea pigs from South America). If you children haven t read the Bill Peet book, check it out before you go. They are ADORABLE! This zoo has ALL the wonderful animals children of all ages are hoping to see elephants, giraffes, lions and other wild cats, gorillas and monkeys (check out Gibbon Island so fun to watch the gibbon chase each other around and swing with them extraordinarily long arms), lots of birds including bright pink flamingos, reptiles, fascinating Giant Anteaters (who carry their babies on their backs) and now they even have penguins!

You definitely want to check out the train schedule, to make sure you catch it running. My kids would not feel the day was complete without taking a trip around the perimeter on the quaint little train. There is also a petting zoo which at times has food for sale to feed the animals. If you kids need time to just RUN, there are numerous lovely grass areas with gorgeous views of the Pacific, in addition to a fun little playground.

Truly, the SB Zoo has appeal for all ages! It will be on the top of our list for any visits to beautiful Santa Barbara for the rest of our lives.
