The San Diego Zoo is the best zoo my family has visited so far. Whenever we are in San Diego, we always make a trip to this zoo. The zoo is free for children during the month of October, which is also perfect weather then. Wear comfortable shoes, since this zoo is very large, and you'll be walking up and down steep roads. It is very clean and well kept. There is a Children's zoo within the zoo, which is great for younger children to get up close to the animals. You can see baby chicks hatching, pet and feed deer and sheep. My sons love the Reptile House, which always has interesting snakes and lizards on display. You can pack a lunch and bring in the zoo to eat, since the food there is quite expensive. The gorilla exhibit is really fun, as well as the hippo exhibit. The new elephant area is very informative.

We like the zoo, and have a membership, but are sometimes bothered by the small enclosures. They are getting better as the zoo renovates, but we still prefer the Zoo's Safari Park (formerly Wild Animal Park) in Escondido. Still, the zoo has some fantastic exhibits and learning areas, including the new polar bear/arctic play area. And the skyfari is a highlight of our visits each time -- to fly over the zoo and see Balboa Park and downtown San Diego from the sky is great fun!
