San Antonio Zoo

Description:

The San Antonio Zoo is located at the headwaters of the San Antonio River -- just minutes from the Alamo and the Riverwalk. Artesian water flows through the Zoo grounds, an abandoned rock quarry where tall oak, pecan, and bald cypress trees provide cool summer shade. Limestone cliffs surround the naturalistic enclosures and make dramatic backdrops for many of the animal habitats. Along the riverbank, humid, tropical conditions prevail, while a short distance away, semi-arid hillsides dominate. San Antonio's temperate climate makes it possible to keep most animals in outside enclosures year round.

The San Antonio Zoo has been a favorite destination for us on field trip days. We have purchased a zoo membership which allows us to go as often as we like for one year, and is very affordable for our family of 7. I love this because on each visit we have a completely different experience. There is always something new to see and different animals are more active on different days and in different seasons. It is a very clean facility with helpful volunteers to talk to kids about the exhibits. They allow coolers in the park so we often pack a picnic lunch to eat in one of their beautifully landscaped sitting areas. The landscaping is educational as well, with many items labeled and always something in bloom. Once again, we learn so much by watching the seasons change at the zoo. They have just openend the second phase of their new Africa Live exhibit which is very nice.

My family loves the San Antonio Zoo! Bring a picnic lunch and stay the day. Bonus...there is a kiddie splash area for cooling off in the hot summer months!

The zoo offers a variety of classes for homeschoolers, which just adds to our overall love of the zoo.

Great exhibits in a beautiful setting. I am from San Antonio but live in Houston. I travel to San Antonio specifically to take kids to the zoo here. Highly recommended.
