I just visited this museum two weeks ago with my son (12) and daughter(7). We were just finishing up a study of Ancient Egypt and this was the perfect culminating trip. We downloaded a scavenger hunt/passport from the musuem's website beforehand and looked over their teaching resource handouts. The exhibits were fascinating and I was pleased to see how much my 7 year old recognized just in the display cases (my son had the same experience on his first trip to this museum). Many aspects of Egyptian civilization were covered in the museum- not just the mummies and pyramids! Although the mummies were a draw for the kids! The undergound "tomb" tour was also a favorite for them and they went through several times. But the experience they have remembered most vividly was playing on the outdoor life-sized senet game board. They have the rules posted and large playing pieces you can move around as you walk upon the gameboard!
