 | | Mary Beth, Co-op Member | | We visited the Richard Nixon Birthplace and Presidential Library and really felt that we got a sense of history by taking the time to explore it fully. My husband was raised in CA and neither he nor his family had ever visited this great site. So we trucked off to it. It is easily accessible and a nice afternoon trip. Depending on your background and interest, you might delve right into the foreign policy history of Nixon's tenure or take your time and start at the early years of his life. The kids got a great feeling for the life of a humble-background young man who worked REALLY HARD to get to where he ended up. That part of his personality was not really known to the adults on our trip so it was great to see. The kids learned about key figures in our history of the time. Watergate was NOT glossed over and it felt like a balanced portrayal. The best part was the coverage of Vietnam and Nixon's work in Asia in general. So much new information that I would never have known if we did not visit. The kids got a better appreciation of our history from walking through a president's life than through any other media. This visit hooked us on presidential libraries! |
