This is a great little zoo! It's compact so you aren't walking mile after mile between exhibits, you are up close to the animals, there's plenty of shade and places to rest, and the parking is relatively close. In my opinion, it's ideal for smaller kids and kids still in strollers - you can be in and out in a couple of hours easily - something that is hard to do in the bigger zoos where you end up with grumpy kids after walking for 5 hours in the sun!

It would also be good if you have a child interested in observing and studying a particular animal that they have on exhibit. If you call ahead you can usually arrange to have a zookeeper talk to your kids and tell them more about the animal.

Because the zoo is pretty much in downtown Lansing, getting there can be a little tricky if you don't know your way around but there are LOTS of well marked signs so just keep your eyes open for them when you get off the X-way and you should do just fine.

I grew up within biking distance of Potter Park. It's a wonderful zoo, with a pleasant mix of indoor and outdoor spaces. The monkey house and penguin exhibits in particular are top notch. Their winter programming with lights, Santa and hot chocolate is very nice as well.

Also, don't miss the canoe rental directly outside the zoo! In the summer, it's nice to visit the zoo in the morning and then spend the afternoon on the river, getting an alligator's view of the city as you head downtown.

The riverwalk trail runs right around the zoo as well, so you can literally go to the zoo, hit the trail and visit Impression 5 or the REOlds Automobile museum without stepping into your car. The trail also features a scale model of our solar system, showing just how far those planets really are away from us!
