Facility:Old World Wisconsin
Description:The immigrants and pioneers who settled Wisconsin came from vastly different cultures. Yet they all shared a common purpose - the determined pursuit of the American Dream. Old World Wisconsin tells their stories by re-creating a world in which farmers, tradesmen and shopkeepers lead their lives the same way these settlers did. Bring the whole family to see, hear and smell the same things that filled the senses of those hardy souls who chose to build new lives in a faraway place called Wisconsin. This 576 acre museum has over 50 preserved and furnished buildings from the 1800s.

We've been here several times during various seasons. It's a big place, so there are still areas we haven't seen yet. Wear comfortable shoes, because the settlements are spread out into a number of areas (although they have shuttlebuses to take you everywhere, too). The town features a church, town hall (where they have a demonstration of 19th century pioneer toys), general store, inn and other buildings and demonstrations. There are also ethnic settlements, such as Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, German, African-American and more. These give a good demonstration of how the pioneer families integrated their homeland customs with the landscape and environment of Wisconsin. The costumed docents and demonstrators are very knowledgeable about the homesteads. There special programs are fun, too. A 4th of July event we attended included a 19th century parade, suffragette speeches (complete with 19th century heckling males) and a "Professor" blowing an anvil into the sky with gun powder. A very different way to celebrate than the modern town festival and fireworks.

My children and friends loved this visit, and we will be returning as we didn't get to see everything. There are a lot of hands on activities - learning how to play the way pioneers did with hoops and sticks or stilts was especially fun. The kids all tried everything they could, and the docents were all very patient, explained things in their area, and very good about answering questions. It's a huge place, so you should take a few minutes to plan out your day and coordinate your trek with the shuttle schedule. We stayed through lunch, and brought our own. There was a nice picnic area just outside the park, but it filled up quickly. I believe you can eat there, as well, but we did not check that out. Certain exhibits or activities are only open at certain times, so you should check ahead of time if you want to see something in particular. Overall, and awesome, if tiring day.
