| Description: | ClickScholar Cie recommended this terrific website from NASA that offers a free course on aviation technology and air traffic management. Through tutorials and interactive activities, students learn scientific concepts involved in RADAR, sound, and meteorology as it applies to flight, while applying principles of algebra, geometry and calculus. The course modules include: • Aeronautics • Navigation • Weather • Air Traffic Management • Communications • Airport Design • Research In general, each of the modules includes an overview, a tutorial of the curriculum complemented by free, downloadable print materials (PDF files), interactive activities (Flash or Java animations), a case study simulation, and a 20-question assessment test. Score 80% and print out a personalized certificate of completion from NASA. Take the whole course, or use each module as a stand-alone lesson. You'll also find tips for parents and teachers, as well as a section on "Careers" that contain bios and interviews with pilots, engineers, research scientists, etc. Don't miss the "Online Resources" that archive a wealth of educational material including "NASA's "Beginners Guide to Aeronautics" with interactive simulations that explain: • Aerodynamics & How Airplanes Work • Propulsion & Jet Engines • Wind Tunnels • Hypersonic Flow • Shock Waves and Compressible Aerodynamics • A Beginner's Guide to Model Rockets • A Beginner's Guide to Kite While designed for use in the classroom, NASA says the program has been successfully used by "after school programs, homeschools, and civil aviation clubs" as well.
