Facility:Mud Island River Park
Description:Learn about the history of the Mississippi River on an island in the middle of the river! Learning opportunities include a virtual timeline of transportation on the river, a scavenger hunt along a scale model of the Mississippi, a Civil Walk Riverfront tour and much more! The River Walk is one of the most unique representations of the Mississippi River in the world. It is a 5-block long replica of the lower Mississippi river, from Cairo, IL, to New Orleans, LA. Each 30" stride is equivalent to one mile on the actual river. Along your journey, you'll revisit historical events and learn about geographical transformations.

We LOVED Mud Island!

There is a museum that is fantastic. You can do the headphone tour thing, which was kind of cool, or just take yourself through. It was a great mix of fun and education for us (8 & 5 yr old boys at the time). There is a huge riverboat that you go in, a music section, weapons, household things, etc. Our kids enjoyed it.

Outside there are paddle boats, a little cafe, grassy area to lounge in, and a replica of the Mississippi River done to scale! It is even topographically correct. It's crazy neat. The kids can walk through the water so I do suggest either sandals or water shoes. We didn't know about this and had our kids wear their socks. There were even kids in their bathing suits playing in a waterfall thing.

The gift shop was tiny, but it had some fun things. There were some great educational books for sale. We homeschool, so I'm always on the lookout for interesting books. ;)
