The mission had a pond in the middle of the courtyard that was the highlight for my boys as it contained goldfish and plants. I found the architecture to be beautiful and the chapel was gorgeous. The arched hallways made a pleasant place to walk on a spring day. The gardens were landscaped with many beautiful flowers and it was a very peaceful place to just sit and relax. I learned a lot about the early missions from the various placards and guides they had on the grounds. Being Catholic it held a special fascination for me but I think it was an inspiring place to visit as it does help one appreciate the early history of California. One of my boys later chose to do a model of this mission as it stuck in his mind as a kind of neat place. Their gift shop also had information on other missions in California. |

They have a festival to celebrate this every year. We took several children from 5-12yrs and they each had a favorite part. There was a woman giving a demonstration of a Native American dance and music who told about the history of her people and the impact that the building of the mission had on her tribe. There were several small interactive exhibits for the children. It's very close to the train station and would be fun to take the Amtrak ride to and from San Juan Capistrano. |
