Facility:Mission La Purisima Concepcion
Description:Mission La Purisima Concepcion was founded 8 December 1787 (11th in order) by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen. The mission is named for The Immaculate Concepcion of Mary the Most Pure. The Indian name was Algsacupí. The current mission is a restoration of portions of the 1812 earthquake reconstruction when the mission was moved from its original location about four miles to its present location. The mission is a State Historical Park and is one of the most complete mission restorations; including 25 miles of hiking and riding trails. Periodic craft demonstrations are given by docents during the summer. There is no active church at the mission.

Our homeschool group attended the mission's very popular living history day field trip. The field trip was geared to fourth grade curriculum. The docents were friendly and informative. The children made homemade tortillas and learned about other skills such as candle making. The children enjoyed touring the mission, seeing the animals living at La Purissima, and learning about California's history. These field trips fill up quickly and reservations are required.

The best mission I have visited. Live animals on site. Only charge is for parking. Many living history events during the year that do not require registration. The living history programs are really good. Make adobe bricks, tortillas, learn to make and use period toys and lots of other fun educational things to see and do. Great hiking year round and a perfect picnic spot under the oaks.
