 | | Sharon Hale, Co-op Member | We did a guided tour of the Mayfield Fort which was very informative and had lots of hands on activities for the kids. It's a small place, so there's not a ton to see...it's literally just a hilltop overlooking the surrounding area, but the information given made it worthwhile for sure. We learned how the hills surrounding our area were used as lookouts and communication points during the war so they could signal each other (nearby Signal Hill is one such hill), how the railroad tracks nearby helped with logistics of food supply, and how they defended the hill. The children had a chance to "shoot" a cannon and took turns loading, priming, and firing it (ok, so it didn't really shoot, but they got to see what it took to make it happen!), and they also played a game with signal flags to learn how the soldiers communicated with each other across the distances. There was another station where they learned and saw firsthand items soldiers would have had with them on the battlefield.
This really made for a pleasant morning out of doors learning some hands-on history. |
