 | | Mary E., Co-op Member | | We toured this museum and found it to be a very interesting place. There are multiple "ships" in the water that comprise the museum. One of the ships Had even been used in filming the movie "Master and Commander". Once you have paid admission you get your hand stamped and are free to move around from ship to ship. We spent quite a bit of time on board. There were people on each ship available to answer questions and they seemed to be very knowledgeable. There was also a gift shop associated with the museum that had many books and things for sale that would be useful for homeschoolers doing a unit study on the ocean. |

 | | Katrina, Co-op Member | Even better than the museum are the field trips they put on. Here is a description of the one my boys attended.
Cast Off for America
Looking for a better life, students sign aboard as emigrants working for their passage to America. On this epic voyage they must abandon everything that is familiar to them and adapt to the new demands of shipboard life.
The voyage will take them three quarters of the way around the world and traverse the infamous Roaring Forties. Life promises to be challenging as students must communicate and work together in order to survive. The skills they learn, however, will become invaluable in helping to prepare for an uncertain future in the New World.
Day Program
Grades: 4-6
Length: 5 hours
Times: 9:30am 2:30pm
Class Size: 26-60 students, Maximum 8 adults.
Cost: $27 per student, $10 per adult. Teacher is free
This program includes terminology and a novel to read before you attend it. The children use real terms while aboard and learn how to work on the ship. It was one of the best hands-on history field trips we have ever been on. The only complaint my boys had was they wanted the ship to actually leave dock. This field trip does not ever go anywhere. |

 | | Tiffani, Co-op Member | | You have to love these beautiful ships and the stories behind them! If I remember correctly there was one of the ships you could pay extra for and go on a sail. They do historical reenactments of cannon shoot outs. Just a note to watch out for your younger children...Many of the surfaces are slippery and can cause trips. But enjoy this wonderful history trip! |

 | | Mary Beth, Co-op Member | | We really enjoyed the Maritime Museum and toured all the ships included in the museum (which must have totalled 7 if I remember correctly). The Soviet Sub and other ships had factually informative information and many had short videos that really captured the spirit of the eras of maritime history portrayed. We had the special pleasure of visiting during the Gauguin and Melville exhibits in which the history of these men who visited the South Seas was presented. I learned more about Gauguin, his art and his life than I had as a college student who loved art history! I would just change my strategy and give the museum a whole day. Go in the morning, leave and get your hand stamped, have a great lunch nearby or in Little Italy and come back. Rushing through it is a bad idea. |
