The museum has a great permanent collection of fine art from the 1700s to the present. There is a wonderful selection of materials from around the world and throughout history in the large gallery in the lower floor. If you're studying Egypt, Native Americans, China and Asian cultures, you will definitely find interesting objects to look at and think about. The visiting exhibits tend to be interesting as well. Of course, like any art museum there's some nudity, so you might want to prepare your kids for that. We have enjoyed the many Family Days which are held a few times a year on Saturday mornings. These have included make-it/take-it crafts, live music and dance. The museum is free as are the special events. Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because this art museum is on the University of Illinois campus that it's limited to college students. The staff tries to make it a place the people of all ages can enjoy. There's also an educational room downstairs where things can be checked out. |
