 | | Marcy Houck, Co-op Member | Looking to have a relaxing day enjoying nature, exploring various wildflife and of course, birding? Then the James Audabon Center at Mill Grove in Audabon, Pa.,is just the place to head on a beautiful spring morning!
Offering free nature walks which include stops that describe how to build a bird sanctuary in your own backyard as well as a great way to get up close and enjoy nature, this site is great for the youngest and the oldest in your group. Even high energy kids can find lots to do chasing the ducks near the pond; exploring an old springhouse and traipsing through the woods.
While the museum tour was interesting, featuring the most beautiful artwork James Audabon created, younger children may be a bit bored so consdier your children's individual interest before paying the low entry fee $4 for adults and $2 for children). personally, I'd save the msucuem tour for one of their free visitor's days and save the extra bucks to use in their unique little gift shop.
Here's another note: be sure sure tos to stop by the education office for a chat with Carrie. She's the director there and is happy to set up private tours for homeschooling groups (designed to match your curriculum),for a samll fee.
For those wanting to make a day of it, pack a big picnic lunch and enjoy the picnic tables and pavilion for a special treat. |
