 | | Amy L., Co-op Member | My family (kids ages 9-16) went to the George Wahington National Masonic Memorial, and we all loved it. The building itself is a grand structure, and the grounds are simply beautiful.
As you might expect, the masonry in this building is absolutely spectacular. There are also many beautiful stained glass windows on the inside.
We joined a tour (which was free) led by a retired mason who was very knowledgable about the building, the Freemasons, and George Washington. Our tour guide took us to each level of the building on a funny vertical-and-sideways-running elevator and explained everything in great detail. We especially loved hearing all about George Washington. I learned things about good old George that I had never known before.
Each level of the building has a different theme. Two levels are devoted to Washington's life and death, there are levels about the history of the masons, there is a level all about the Knights Templar (which I particularly enjoyed), and so on. A couple of the levels were a bit cheesy, but the other levels more than made up for them. At the top of the building you could go outside to the observation deck. What a fantastic view of Washington, DC!
The tour lasted about an hour and was very interesting and informative. The Memorial was very easy to get to and the parking was free. All in all, it was a great field trip! |
