Empire Mine is a great place to visit to learn more about the Gold Rush era and get a hands on experience. It is also packed full of information about mining and minerals/rocks in general. The beautiful grounds are great for a picnic, too. Before going, contact them to determine what is happening at any given time. At certain times more exhibits are open and it is a much more in depth experience if you can see more of the exhibits.
