Resource:Aunt Mathilda's Math Challenges
Provider:DuPage Children's Museum
Summary:The DuPage Children's Museum sponsors this website where the fictional Aunt Mathilda Mathews or "Aunty Math" presents a dozen math challenges for students in grades K-5
Description:As the website explains, "Each math challenge is presented in the form of a story taken from the life of Aunty Math, her two nephews Barney and Danny, and her niece Gina." There are a variety of methods suggested for solving Aunty Math's challenges including:

-draw a picture
-use manipulatives
-search for a pattern
-act it out
-guess and check
-make a list, chart, or graph
-visualize a solution

When you get to the site you'll see a menu that you can use to learn more about "Aunty Math" and the mathematics behind her challenges. Then, click on:

*Try Today's Challenge - Read the featured math challenge story. Notice that there is a link at the end of the story that takes you to an "easier" version of the challenge. Below that is a link for parents/teachers that provides tips on how to prepare and coach students through the challenge.

*Try Past Challenges - You'll find 11 previous "Aunty Math" challenges archived in this section.

On the main menu, you'll also find tips for modifying and/or extending the challenges for children with different learning styles.

While the site has a childish look and the math challenges are designed for kids in grades K-5 - in my opinion, the website is not really kid-friendly. The layout is geared more for parents and educators. My advice is for parents to preview the site and then guide your child through the math challenges there. Or, print them out and use them offline. Children who are non-readers will need assistance.
