| Detroit Zoological Park |
| The Detroit Zoo is a natural habitat for more than 3,000 animals and 700 varieties of trees, shrubbery and flowering plants. Of the 340 species at the Zoo, 64 are officially listed as endangered or threatened and two are extinct in the wild. Major exhibits include the Arctic Ring of Life, the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery, Great Apes of Harambee, Penguinarium, free-flight aviary, Holden Museum of Living Reptiles, the National Amphibian Conservation Center, giraffes, Siberian tigers, African lions, Asian elephants, Grevy's zebras, Bactrian camels, snow monkeys and the prairie dog exhibit, just to name a few. In 2001 the Detroit Zoo opened the world’s largest polar bear exhibit, the Arctic Ring of Life. The Arctic Ring of Life features the Polar Passage, a 70-ft long clear tunnel in which visitors can get breathtaking views of diving and swimming polar bears and seals. Guests can experience the tundra, open sea and pack ice of the Arctic environment, and the animals that are distinctively adapted to life there. |

 | | Michelle, Co-op Member | When we travel going to the local zoo is our "thing" - or at least it was for about 10 years. And while the Detroit Zoo is the physically closest zoo to us, it's not our favorite. This isn't to say it's bad, it's just very spread out and you will do a lot of walking. A stroller or wagon is highly recommended if you have little ones or want to bring along a cooler. A lot of the older exhibits put you many yards away from the animals unlike some of the newer ones that use glass walls to let you get up close and personal.
This zoo can get really crowded so try to plan accordingly - going in the winter can be a real treat on a sunny day. Just bundle up and escape to some of the buildings to warm up now and then. |

 | | Tami Kromer, Co-op Member | The Detroit Zoo is a favorite of our family.
We especially like going in the winter to get a different perspective of the animals.
Favorite exhibits are: snow monkeys, butterfly house, the reptile house, polar bears, giraffes and the prairie dogs.
Plan on all day to attempt to see everything. |

 | | Jan S., Co-op Member | | We have been there before but made our first cold weather visit in March. It was a lot different and very cool! A polar bear stood in front of us and walked backwards and forwards for over 10 minutes. He looked like he was doing a dance! |

 | | Kristen S, Co-op Member | | We love going to this zoo! We always get a membership and go regularly ... just be careful, during non-peak times of the year (winter and early spring) not all the bathrooms are open... it can be a long walk for a little one to find one that is open. |
