Deanna Rose Farmstead - School History Tour
This tour is well worth the cost and the effort of getting a group together. We went with a group of about 12 homeschool students Kindergarten - 8th grade and moms. We had a history lesson in the one room school house. We got a period picture of our "class" in the school. The kids were given period costumes to wear. We had a great lesson on the Kanza indians in the indian encampment. The kids were shown and learned about many artifacts. Even the fidgetyist kids were engaged. Then we got to fish in the pond with a pole and worms provided. I think every kid caught at least one fish. This day was an ideal homeschooling day for us. My daughter wants to do it again even after I explained that they would do pretty much the same lessons.

Deanna Rose Farmstead is by far one of our favorite places to venture. There are 12 acres of farmland filled with bison, cows, horses, peacocks, pigs, and injured bird's of prey. There is also a petting zoo full of friendly and clean animals including horses, rabbits, sheep, chickens, ducks and goats.
My son's favorite activities include mining for gold, milking the cows at the dairy farm, riding the ponies, fishing in the pond, and sliding down the slides in the silos. The Kanza Indian Encampment is historically accurate and educational.
We especially love to visit in the Spring when all the babies are being born.
There is a beautiful picnic area and in the summer a snow cone stand.
All of this is a mere $2 fee per person, one and under are free.

Fantastic field trip location for large range of ages and interests.
At the Farmstead you have two choices for field trip type events: you can go as family or you can get a group together and book a tour. If you book a tour (min. of 10 students) you can choose the Farm Tour or KS History School Tour. The Farm Tour is for all ages and includes a guided tour of the farm, a wagon ride, a bottle for each student to feed the baby goats, and a private area to have your sack lunch (lunch not included-so bring your own). At the time of this review this was $5 per person. The KS History School Tour is geared towards 1-5th graders (min. 10 students) and includes a living history event at the 1 room school house and Indian Encampment, fishing pole and worms at the fishing pond, and a private lunch area (bring your own). This was also $5 each. We got a group together and attended the KS History Tour which was tons of fun as well as educational. The tour guides are fantastic at engaging all the kids and keeping their attention throughout. After lunch our group stayed and went to the mining camp ($4-$6 per person), went to the petting zoo, and played at one of the playgrounds. This made the even a whole day for overall not a lot of money.
If you aren't interested in getting a group together you can always just go on your own. Here is what you need to know:
During the week Monday-Thursday there is no fee to get into the Farmstead; however, the school house and Indian Encampment are usually closed between 9:30am-12:30pm for group tours. There are no living history events for non-groups, but you can walk through when they are open. It is still fun and educational. If you decide to go Friday-Sunday there is a $2.00 per person fee (children under 1 are free).
Regardless of which option you choose this is a great activity that you can spend a couple hours to all day in. Here is a list (though perhaps not complete) of what the Farmstead has to offer that you can do after your group tour or whenever if you go on your own (if there is an extra fee, I have listed it):
Push Peddle Tractors
Petting Zoo (feed is 0.25)
3 Playgrounds
Pony Rides ($3.00pp)
Horse Drawn Wagon Rides ($3.00pp)
Fishing ($3.00pp)
Mining Camp ($4-$6 depending on size of bag)
Dairy Barn (there may be a fee for the Cinemoo, we didn't go to the dairy barn, but the guide told us they had a concession stand and bathrooms inside-as well as a cow model the kids could "milk")
Indian Encampment
One Room School House
The Farmstead offers a combo pack option for a set fee that includes mining, a wagonride, pony ride, fishing, and either a bottle or food for the baby goats which was $10.
Our group had a blast. We've decided to do it every year!
