| Cooper-Molera Adobe |
California life in the 1850s is depicted in this 3-acre complex by living history demonstration, farm animals and historic vegetable and flower gardens. The buildings reflect the period from 1823, when Monterey was the major city in California, to 1900, when it had waned to a small town.
Fully restored in the 1980s, this adobe displays the elegance and wealth of the John Rogers Cooper family. Cooper was from New England, immigrated to California and married into a Mexican family. Cooper traveled extensively as a ship captain, trading in hides, tallow, general merchandise and sea otter pelts.
Also located here is the Cooper Store giftshop where one can find reproductions, from toys to furniture. An extensive collection of books celebrate the past as well as discuss the future of cultural and natural resources of Monterey and California.

 | | Amy G., Co-op Member | | This historical site is one of many that you can make on the Historical Walking Tour of downtown Monterey. The Cooper-Molera store has friendly staff that encourage the children and adults alike to explore the gardens and they are always full of information about the early California days. The gift shop has many resources for a home school family that may be studying early CA history, from the Ranchos to the Missions to the Colonial days. (Of course my daughter's favorite stop is at the hard candy stick display!) Over the summer they offer a wonderful day camp for children that takes the kids through all of the hands-on activities that settlers would have experienced during these time periods (candle-making, carding wool, leather branding...)At Christmas time a "Tour of the Adobes" showcases all of the historical buildings in downtown Monterey, as well as the Cooper-Molera, with refreshments, lights, music and displays of the buildings decorated for the holidays! |
