| Carl Sandburg, nationally renowned poet, biographer, lecturer, newspaper columnist, folksinger, author of American fairytales, and winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, provided broad and enduring 20th century insight into the circumstances, worth and spirit of the American people. | | Pam M., Co-op Member | This is a wonderful field trip that can be used along with either Language Arts in studying Carl Sandburg's writings or NC History as far as famouse places in NC. The grounds are beautiful and there are many hiking opportunities available. There is a guided tour of the home of Carl Sandburg which is worth taking!! Educational videos can be viewed while waiting for the tour as well. There are many wonderful picnic spots, for example the large rock that Mr. Sandburg used to sit on and think and write!
The only drawbacks are the trails are not stroller-friendly so consider this if you have little ones. Also there is a limited amount of parking, so you may want to schedule your trip during the week when the crowd is thinner. Bring a camera because you will want to take photos of this beautiful place!!! There is also an online site filled with educational games and activities for students to participate in prior to the field trip or afterwards. They are a lot of fun too!!
There is a gift shop as well with interesting purchase items, not just normal run of the mill souveneirs. |
