Description:

The California State Railroad Museum (CSRM) in Old Sacramento is the world-class tribute to the role of the "iron horse" in connecting California to the rest of the nation. Our museum features 21 lavishly restored locomotives and cars, some dating back to 1862. There is a full-scale diorama of an 1860s construction site high in the Sierra Nevada as well as a bridge elevated 24 feet above the museum floor.

Museum is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day

Sacramento Southern Railroad Trains depart from the 1867 Central Pacific Freight Depot in Old Sacramento located at Front &"K" Streets. Steam excursion trains run on weekends through September, departures on the hour 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Trains also run on Memorial Day, Labor Day and selected weekends October through December.

A wonderful field trip to see trains up close and personal! There are many that you can board, including two that are simulated to feel as though you are riding the train. There is a second floor Thomas the train play area that is a great hit with the younger kids. You can get a kids museum pass for only $20 a year that gets the child and one adult in for free all year long. Take note that kids 5 and under are free. Great rainy day field trip! Just dont forget your quarters for parking.

This is a fabulous place to visit! So many trains that you can walk through, peer into or sit in the conductor's seat ensure that everyone stays engaged no matter what their age. What a great way to make history come alive. Tip: Get the family discount pack for $60/year and get mom and dad and all the kids + 2 guest tickets! Includes free excursion train rides on the Sacramento So. Railroad, discounts, invitation to special events as well as admission and excursion train rides to the 1897 Railtown State Historic Park in Jamestown. This is a perfect hands-on component to your train unit study!
