Facility:Cades Cove
Description:Highlights: historic buildings, wildlife viewing, bicycling

Cades Cove is a lush valley surrounded by mountains and one of the most popular destinations in the Great Smokies. Deer are almost always sighted in the fields, and observations of other wildlife, including bear, Wild Turkey, and fox are possible. Please use pullouts when viewing wildlife and never approach or feed animals.

A wide array of historic buildings dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries is scattered through-out the cove. These include a grist mill, a variety of barns, three churches, and a marvelous collection of log homes and outbuildings.

An 11-mile one-way loop road takes you around the cove. Traffic will be heavy during the tourist season in summer and fall and on weekends year-round.

Wonderful way to get to see nature from your car. We enjoy the hiking that can be found there as well. We have seen many animals on our visits to the Cove: River Otters, Elk, Deer, & Bears to mention a few. The visitors center at the middles is a must do! The ranger led programs are a must as well!

Cade's Cove was a neat adventure. Driving through the history of the area was interesting. One of the most fascinating parts was reading some the headstones at the church cemeteries. My kids were amazed at the number of babies and young children buried...some to the same mom.

We were also able to see quite a bit of wildlife, especially deer. They would be within 10 feet of you and not be spooked. Many people say this is where they see bear but we didn't see any on either one of our two visits.

The best time to see wildlife is in the evening but make sure to give yourself plenty of time for exploring historical areas. We didn't and had to rush through faster than we would have liked, and the main village was already closing by the time we knew it was there.

If you visit the Smokey Mountains, this is a must see area.

We camped at Cades Cove for 3 days and had a wonderful time. My husband had grown up camping at Cades Cove every summer and was able to relive those moments with our kids. That special "rock", that place in the stream when... and so on. We were able to pass the legacy onto the next generation!
