The Birch Aquarium is a fantastic field trip that we make at least once a month! We have memberships there since we go so often. The indoor tanks are organized by region (i.e. San Diego Bay, Baja Reef, etc.) and additional learning experiences such as computer kiosks with video and photo and music options add to the learning options. A giant floor to vaulted ceiling tank is breathtaking. The outdoor above-ground tide pools on the ocean-view observation deck are fantastic, with plenty of staff around to answer questions, provide info, and guide visitors in safely petting animals in the pools. The educational wing has various learning centers on environmental and ocean-related topics, including a play area for kids with engaging options such as puppets with kid-sized reef cut-outs and a giant magnetic board game on a wall. The outdoor water current experiment is engaging for younger kids up to elementary. A nice cafe outside means we can spend the day there if we like. Have fun!
