The northeastern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin area, this is probably the only place left to pick your own apples. While it's more expensive (at about $40/bushel)to pick your apples here than at the local grocery store, it's a fun experience for the kids. Bring a wagon into the orchard with you. The plastic bushel bag gets heavy. They also let people eat all the apples they want to in the orchard. This allows you to taste an apple before you decide to fill up the bag with more of them. My kids fell in love with the ginger golds. Afterward, the younger kids will enjoy the petting zoo and playground area. There are a lot of school groups that go there, so avoid these crowds by going in the late afternoon, when buses have to leave. What do you do with an entire bushel of apples? Go with a friend and split the cost. Make apple butter in the crock pot and freeze it to enjoy all winter. Peel, slice and freeze for apple pies. That is, if the kids haven't eaten them all by the time you get around to it.
I'm giving this field trip three stars simply because of the high price. However, picking the types of apples that are more expensive in the grocery store will help make the cost less painful.

This is a very fun place. They have a little train rides for kids and a playground area with a corn maze and a big slide and they a huge area to go pick apples. There is a restaurant that is very good, and they have apple cider donuts and yummy apple cider.
It is cheaper to go on the weekdays, then on the weekends when they have their special festivals. This is a wonderful place that my children love!
