| American Village |
American Village desires that young people know America's history (the stories of how and why America is free); cherish the ideals of liberty (and how these ideals are enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the institutions of self-government); and serve our country as good citizens (by using the tools and habits of good citizenship as members of a free, self-governing Nation).
The facility is a replica of many of the colonial homes and even has a reproduction of the Oval Office. There are tours with guides dressed in period clothing and usually the tours last about 3-4 hours. Tours are interactive and the kids participate in dramas as they learn about different periods of America's history. |

 | | E. Renicks, Co-op Member | If you have a history buff, or want to inspire one, a visit to American Village is a real treat. The grounds themselves are beautiful to walk through, but taking the time to visit all the different replica buildings and reading about the places and events they honor is a real educational treat. One favorite is the Oval Office replica (complete with an on-site scavenger hunt), and the chance to visit with costumed and well-trained actors portraying different historical figures from American history. We spent time with George Washington and learned several things about the "father of our country" that you don't find in textbooks.
The staff are knowledgeable and courteous. You can tell that folks here have a real passion for making history come alive for your kids. American Village is best suited for kids 3rd grade and up, though even my first grader had a fun time. It is definitely a resource we will use in the future as we study American history more deeply. |
