Facility:American Sign Museum
Description:Come take a walk down Memory Lane and experience the only public sign museum in America. Arrange a visit to the American Sign Museum and you'll get a one and a half hour personal tour of more than 150 vintage signs guided by the museum's founder himself-Tod Swormstedt. Swormstedt is the former editor and publisher of Signs of the Times magazine, a trade journal which celebrated its 100th anniversary of continuous publication in May, 2006.

You'll learn about neon: How it works and when it was introduced. You'll witness spinning Sputnik-like signs from bygone eras. And you'll see handlettered showcards from the Las Vegas days of Frank Sinatra and Charo. More than 150 signs in all, plus sign-making tools and equipment, salesman's samples, and more.

This museum was really unique. You get an old vintage pin (the kind that has a tab and you wrap it over your collar) that's neat. You'll learn all kinds of things about the progression of sign-making. Sounds boring? It really isn't! You'll learn how signs used to be made by hammering gold and silver, the history of neon tubing and how different neon colors are made. There is even a display where kids (of all ages) can play with neon letters. It's a blast from the past as you come across signs from your youth and from your parent's youth. Our trip was lead by the proprietor himself and he's super passionate about signs. He loves to answer questions too.
